8 Budget-friendly Backyard Ideas

Steven Ho Tips

The best way to save money on your backyard is doing it yourself. Materials are typically inexpensive and easily accessible at your local garden store, making it the best way to give your garden a makeover!

  1. Light It Up

Just by adding ambient lights to available spaces in your backyard can change the mood. Wrapping fairy lights (or any other inexpensive garden lights) around a tree or a fence can offer a sparkle without being too distracting. Save more along the road by adding solar lights to the mix.

  1. Espaliered Tree

Espla-what? An espaliered tree, for those who aren’t into gardening, is when a tree is made to grow flat either against a wall or a fence, thus creating a “living fence”. The advantage to this is that it’s a unique focal point and doesn’t cost a lot of money. The disadvantage to it however is the overall time it would take.

  1. DIY Seating Area

Stacking concrete blocks on top of each other is a cost-friendly way of creating a bench. Ideally placed by a wall, and then laying a foam pad or mattress over it. You could also paint the concrete blocks if you would like to, to add a pop of colour. However the exposed concrete finish offers a more rustic and modern result.

  1. Cozy Nooks

Create a nook in your garden by adding inexpensive furniture to an area. The space can be defined by a rug or a different kind of chairs in that area. Creating an oasis in your backyard can make the space an escape. Add a hammock or two for summer lounging.

  1. Flea Market Finds

Depending on the look you’re going for, the flea market can be your best friend. Finding arbors and trellises (or anything that can mimic those) with a vintage touch is is a creative way of jazzing up your yard.

  1. Colourful vs. Monochrome

Depending on the size of your yard, colour will play an important role. Typically for smaller yards, sticking to a single colour palette helps keep the space looking neat and organized. Not just with furniture but plant containers as well (think cinder blocks). For larger spaces, the world is your oyster, mix and match if you wish or keep things simple with single or duo-toned palettes.

  1. Soothing Sounds

Can’t afford neither the space or budget for a pond or fountain in your backyard? Think tabletop fountains (click the image below for a tutorial on how to make your own). If that isn’t your cup of tea, just use a portable music player to play some ambient sounds when relaxing in your green space.

  1.  Plant Palette

If you want a garden that ‘flows’ better, stick to less three or less varieties of greenery. By limiting the varieties you allow your garden to have a more consistent look. It also helps dividing the space and creating distinct separations for a more clean view.
