CHILDREN’S AID FOUNDATION

This year I have decided to donate to the Children’s Aid Foundation on behalf of my clients. The Children’s Aid Foundation is an organization that “funds programs that give Canada’s most neglected and vulnerable kids the support they need to reinvent their lives”. The Children’s Aid Foundation supports the Child Welfare Institute which provides “quality training and consolation” to children, youth and families who have experienced, or are at risk of experiencing abuse and neglect”.

They also fund RBC New Beginning: National Diversity Fund for Children, an organization which “enhances the support provided to children, youth and families that are newcomers to Canada and are at risk of entering the child welfare system”. The funds “provide basic necessities, housing, health related expenses, counceling, education supports, and other enrichment activities” for newcomer children. The Children’s Aid society also funds the Prevention & Early Intervention Fund which gives people “personal need items that are critical to care, safety and upbringing of children, such as strollers, diapers, furniture and clothing,” among many other things.

I chose this charity because the number of kids who live in foster homes, residential facilities and supervised care in Canada is staggering. There are 76,000 kids and youth living in these settings, whose parents were not able to care and provide for them. Many of these kids were also victims of some sort of abuse, which is why I think it’s essential to donate to this particular group. While foster homes and other facilities do provide the necessities for these kids, what they receive is incomparable to what kids and youth living with their parents receive. I was lucky enough to have had a good upbringing, which I firmly believe has brought me to where I am today. It is unfair that simply because someone is born into disadvantage that they shouldn’t be able to flourish and reach their potential, which is why I believe it’s important to give to these kids and youth so they can be given the opportunity to grow and achieve their dreams and aspirations.
