Mississauga has been ranked as the safest city in Canada for many years.
The city has many amenities for all its residents. There are 11 Community Centres located throughout the city, along with city-run facilities such as arenas, swimming pools, fitness centres, golf courses, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, soccer pitches and much much more. Mississauga has over 500 parks and over 400kms multi-use trails! With all the parks and trails, there is no shortage of activities for all ages.
According to the Toronto real estate board, there are 33 different communities and neighbourhoods in Mississauga.
While there are many great neighbourhoods in Mississauga, here are my top 5 favourite neighbourhoods to raise a family.
Rathwood
This is a more mature neighbourhood bordering Etobicoke, with great trails along Etobicoke creek and parks, you’re close to the 427 and 403, which gives you quick access to 401 and QEW.
There are good schools, Rockwood mall, Square One Shopping Center, close to Dixie GO. A good mix of different home types and homes have more traditional styles and layouts.
Built throughout the 70s and 80s, the variety of homes on tree-lined streets consist of bungalows, 2 storeys, backsplits and sidesplits.
There are some townhomes, semis and condo options as well. East Mississauga typically is more expensive because of its proximity to Toronto.
Central Erin Mills
This is a great family neighbourhood with great schools from elementary to high school in both Public and Catholic boards.
If you plan to stay in this home for a long time and your kids are young, you won’t have to move for 10-15 years. And if you do, you can upsize and stay in the same neighbourhood easily.
Located in the middle of the city, the main staple in this area is the Erin Mills town centre with tons of shopping and restaurants. The Credit valley hospital is close if you’re in healthcare. Parks and trails for you to explore. Also it has easy access to hwy 403, Streetsville GO.
It’s a relatively younger neighbourhood, with homes mostly built throughout the 90s, there’s a great mix of condos, townhomes, semis, detached homes and even large luxury homes.
Because it’s a younger neighbourhood, you’ll see more cookie cutter style homes. The wide range of housing types offers a wide range of price points for all types of buyers.
Sheridan
In a fantastic mature area along the Credit River and Erindale park, there are mostly larger family homes and some great schools.
Built between the 60s and 70s, the location is close to the QEW, minutes from the lake and Sheridan mall, Clarkson GO makes it convenient for any family.
The prestigious Mississaugua golf and country club is a staple to this neighbourhood and the mansions along Mississauga road are renowned for this exclusive pocket of homes.
Lorne Park
South Mississauga is exclusive and highly sought after because of the large mature trees, the proximity to the lake and the quiet family friendly setting is what movies are made of.
Most homes are built in the 60s and 70s with different styles and sizes, there are a lot of modern custom built homes that have turned Lorne park into a wonderful neighbourhood for families. With top schools and local shops, this is a community that is tucked away from the rest of Mississauga.
This is an exclusive neighbourhood that has mostly large family homes and lacks the variety of entry level homes. It’s close to the QEW and in between Clarkson and Port Credit GO, this is convenient for any commuters to make it home for dinner every night.
Mineola
Just south of Trillium hospital the northern border is the QEW, credit river on the west border and port credit to the south, Mineola is split into East and West with Hurontario dividing the 2 sides.
West Mineola is home to many large custom built homes and is the more exclusive neighbourhood of the two.
With great schools, and proximity to the Port Credit GO Station, the shops and restaurants along the port credit strip, yet just tucked away from all the traffic and visitors is why this neighbourhood is highly sought after.
Homes in this area have a low turnover and are probably the most expensive neighbourhood in Mississauga. However, on the East Side, there are a few more options that aren’t quite as expensive.
What is My Personal Choice?
So my favourite neighbourhood is based for my lifestyle, daily needs and what’s important to me and it might not be for you. As a realtor I travel quite a bit around the city mostly by car so public transit isn’t important to me but highway access is.
I like to eat and I like to run and go for walks on trails. Honestly, any of these neighbourhoods would work for me, but I would want to raise my family in Central Erin Mills.
It has great access to highways, lots of shopping for my daily needs, and great schools for all grades. There are options for me to upsize as my family needs grow so I can see myself living there for many years to come.
